ROADMAP
Day 1 – September 5 (Sunday): Sibiu, Romania
Arrival in Sibiu, the old Saxon Hermannstadt, with its medieval center fully intact: three linked squares, rooftops with the little windows locals call “the eyes of the city” and the Bridge of Lies. In the late afternoon, motorcycle handover, route briefing and gear check. In the evening, welcome dinner with Transylvanian cuisine. Sibiu is our first base: three nights in the same hotel.
Day 2 – September 6 (Monday): Transfăgărășan | 250 km
The day many riders make this trip for. We climb the Transfăgărășan from the north side, a series of serpentine bends considered one of the most spectacular roads in the world. At the top, the glacial lake of Bâlea, above 2,000 meters, and the tunnel that cuts through the Carpathian ridge. We descend the south side to the Vidraru dam and ride back to Sibiu the same way — the road feels completely different in reverse. No hotel change and no luggage on the bike.
Day 3 – September 7 (Tuesday): Saxon villages and Biertan | 150 km
A light day, on purpose. We ride secondary roads through hills and vineyards to the Saxon villages of Transylvania, where churches were built as fortresses against invasions. The most important, Biertan, is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Back in Sibiu in the early afternoon, with free time to explore the town or relax at the hotel.
Day 4 – September 8 (Wednesday): Sibiu, Romania >> Sighișoara >> Brașov, Romania | 200 km
Our first hotel change, and it is worth it. We stop in Sighișoara, the best-preserved inhabited medieval citadel in Europe and birthplace of Vlad the Impaler. Lunch inside the walls and a climb up the Clock Tower. We continue to Brașov, at the foot of the Carpathians, with time for a first walk around Piața Sfatului and the Black Church. Brașov is our second base: three nights.
Day 5 – September 9 (Thursday): Castles: Peleș, Bran and Râșnov | 150 km
Castle day. We start with Peleș, in Sinaia, the neo-Renaissance palace of the Romanian kings and one of the most beautiful castles in Europe. On the way back, Bran Castle, wrapped in the Dracula legend, and the hilltop citadel of Râșnov. Back in Brașov in the late afternoon, with a free evening.
Day 6 – September 10 (Friday): Brașov, Romania - free day
Bikes rest today. The day is yours: hotel spa, shopping and cafés in the old town, the cable car up Mount Tâmpa. For those who wish, we suggest an outing to the Dealu Mare wine region, with a tasting and lunch at a winery.
Day 7 – September 11 (Saturday): Brașov, Romania >> Danube >> Veliko Tarnovo, Bulgaria | 300 km
The longest stretch of the trip, with an early start and short stops. We descend from the Carpathians to the Romanian plain and cross the Danube over the Ruse bridge into Bulgaria. The support van has room for any passenger who prefers to do the flat section by car. Arrival in Veliko Tarnovo, the old capital of the Bulgarian tsars, with houses clinging to the slopes of the Yantra river and the Tsarevets fortress above.
Day 8 – September 12 (Sunday): Veliko Tarnovo >> Shipka Pass >> Valley of Roses >> Plovdiv, Bulgaria | 220 km
We cross the Balkan range over the Shipka Pass, a climb of wide bends up to the monument of the 1877 battle, with views to both sides of the mountains. On the other side lies the Valley of Roses, source of much of the rose oil used in perfumery worldwide, and the golden-domed Russian Church of Shipka. Arrival in Plovdiv in the late afternoon. Plovdiv is our third base: two nights.
Day 9 – September 13 (Monday): Plovdiv, Bulgaria >> Bachkovo Monastery >> Plovdiv | 70 km
A morning on foot in the oldest continuously inhabited city in Europe: the Roman theater still in use, the old town of colorful mansions and the artsy Kapana district. In the afternoon, a short ride to the Bachkovo Monastery at the foot of the Rhodope Mountains, with a stop at Asen’s Fortress. Free evening in Plovdiv.
Day 10 – September 14 (Tuesday): Plovdiv >> Rhodope Mountains >> Bansko, Bulgaria | 200 km
We ride into the Rhodope Mountains, the land of the Orpheus legends, on winding roads through pine forests and stone villages. Arrival in Bansko, at the foot of the Pirin mountains, with time for the spa before dinner. Bansko is our last base: three nights.
Day 11 – September 15 (Wednesday): Rila Monastery | 200 km
We climb through the Rila mountains to the monastery that is Bulgaria’s spiritual symbol, founded in the 10th century and a UNESCO World Heritage Site: the courtyard, the colorful frescoes of the main church and the medieval Hrelyo Tower. Lunch of river trout at a restaurant next to the monastery and back to Bansko in the afternoon.
Day 12 – September 16 (Thursday): Melnik or spa day | 170 km
A day of choice. Those who want to ride head down to Melnik, the smallest town in Bulgaria, surrounded by wind-carved sand pyramids, for lunch at a local winery, where wine has been made since antiquity from the native Shiroka Melnishka grape. Those who prefer to rest stay at the hotel, with the spa and views of the Pirin.
Day 13 – September 17 (Friday): Bansko >> Sofia, Bulgaria | 160 km
Our last riding day, on mountain roads to Sofia. Motorcycle return in the early afternoon and free time to visit the golden-domed Alexander Nevsky Cathedral and the city center. In the evening, farewell dinner to celebrate the journey.
Day 14 – September 18 (Saturday): Sofia, Bulgaria
Breakfast and departure to Sofia airport according to each participant’s flight, taking home memories that last far beyond the trip.
